Part of Sharpen or Replace? The Cost Math for Industrial Tooling
How Many Times Can a Router Bit, Moulder Knife, or Cold Saw Blade Be Reground?
Carbide saw blades get 8 to 15 cycles. Router bits, knives, and cold saw blades each follow different rules. Here is the count Byler publishes for each.
The 8-to-15 figure Byler publishes for carbide circular saw blades does not carry over to every tool. Router bits, moulder knives, and cold saw blades are built differently and wear differently, so each has its own count. This guide gives the figure Byler publishes for each type. For the cost comparison all of these feed into, see the parent guide, Sharpen or Replace? The Cost Math for Industrial Tooling.
Carbide-tipped router bits
Byler's figure is 3 to 5 sharpening cycles for a carbide-tipped router bit under precision diamond-wheel face grinding, until tip height reaches minimum specification. The diamond wheels remove minimum material from the flat face of each carbide tip, restoring edge sharpness without altering the profile-forming geometry, which is why every standard profile β straight, roundover, ogee, rabbet, flush trim, and raised panel β can be sharpened. Sharpening costs 15–30% of the cost of a new bit per cycle; for a $20–$80 bit that adds up to $60–$400 in cumulative replacement-cost avoidance.
Solid carbide spiral bits
Solid carbide spiral router bits support 3 to 7 sharpening cycles under precision diamond grinding before diameter loss or flute-geometry degradation requires retirement. Because the whole cutting edge is carbide, there is no tip to use up; the limit is how much diameter and flute geometry the bit can give up. Byler notes that micrograin and submicron carbide grades support more cycles than standard C3. Sharpening runs 20–40% of new-bit cost per cycle; for a $40–$200 bit that is $120–$1,400 in total replacement-cost avoidance.
Custom moulder knives
A custom moulder knife supports 8 to 12 resharpening cycles before the knife body reaches minimum profile depth, depending on steel grade, profile complexity, and feed rate. Byler also reports that HSS M42 cobalt knives run 20–35% longer between resharpenings than M2 in hardwood.
Cold saw blades
Byler's figure for carbide-tipped cold saw blades is 8 to 15 sharpenings before plate retirement, depending on carbide grade, tooth geometry, and the material cut. Byler publishes no cycle count for the other tooling types it services (chipper blades, insert tooling, PCD tooling, and industrial knives); call (615) 763-6227 and ask.
| Tool | Byler-published cycles | What ends it |
|---|---|---|
| Carbide circular saw blade | 8–15 | Plate retirement |
| Carbide-tipped cold saw blade | 8–15 | Plate retirement |
| Custom moulder knife | 8–12 | Knife body reaches minimum profile depth |
| Carbide-tipped router bit | 3–5 | Tip height reaches minimum specification |
| Solid carbide spiral bit | 3–7 | Diameter loss or flute-geometry degradation |
What preserves cycles across all types
- Sharpen early. A tool run well past dull needs more material removed to recover, which costs cycles. Watch for the signs in how to tell your tooling needs sharpening.
- Protect the tool in transit and storage. A chipped edge from a knock in a drawer costs the same recovery grinding as a chip from a nail.
- Use a service that grinds with minimum material removal. Byler uses diamond grinding wheels on router bits and CBN and diamond wheels on saw blades for that reason.
